kjs862May 7, 12:10 PMOk in a nutshell here's why iDisk and Drop Box have speed differences.

iDisk:

You are creating a WebDAV tunnel to the storage server that must remain open and in sync with your Mac. You drop a file on the iDisk icon and it transfers that file to the server.

Drop Box

Drop Box sits on top of Amazon's S3 storage. What they've done is built up the front end so that when you drop a file on your Drop Box it caches the file locally and then syncs to the cloud "behind the scene". So when you open a file sitting in your Drop Box it feels like working on a local file because you "are" working on the local file. Any changes made from you or anyone the file has shared with will be sync'd in the background.

Most people don't understand the fundamental differences between iDisk and Drop Box. If Apple was to build a front end to iDisk that stored the file locally and then sync'd over WebDAV in the background they'd be able to offer the same performance.

Hope this helps.

Wow great information. I'm sure Apple will change MM's tech in such a way to give better speeds. I mean, this sever farm has be used for this sort of thing... I hope.

QuarterSwedeApr 18, 02:58 PMLooking at the TouchWiz UI, I see your point.

But, at what point does an interface become too generic? For example, the concept of pages of icons in a grid isn't really new or innovative. The concept of swiping across screens is simple and intuitive and should be copied for that exact reason. Should other phone makers put the icons in a circle, "just because" they need to be different? Should they force you to do something differently just because the best and most intuitive way was "already taken"?

Everyone loves car analogies, so: what if Ford decided to sue other carmakers because they copied their steering wheel design? Would other companies have been forced to adopt other types of controls -- joysticks or dials or foot pedals, perhaps -- "just because"? And would that have been good for the auto industry?
Apple had the same problem with the original LISA UI. It was so simplistic that they lost the lawsuits. Same may happen here.

repetersMay 4, 05:07 PMIt would be nice to know more details.

(1) How will users on other than FAST cable modems get Loin?
(2) How can we make emergency backups? I've been in a number of places were downloading gigabytes of data was not a viable option.
(3) Did this idea spring from the "mind" of the same genius who came up with the New and Improved Apple Discussion boards?

citizenzenApr 14, 07:04 PMWe had a president a few years back who strode into the oval on the declaration that he was going to dive in and slice away at the massive gobs of waste, fraud and abuse that was plaguing the government! We all know what happened to him (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Carter#Public_image).

So do you think the best idea is to just cut everybody equally?

To me that is mind-bogglingly simplistic.

We have to be intelligent enough to identify areas of need vs. those that are operating at a decent level of efficiency.

Here's an example ...

I work at a university that is undergoing cuts. But some departments actually make the university money. Does it make sense to cut departments that generate income as much as departments that don't? At least the people in charge here understand the difference and aren't applying "across the board cuts".

StellaApr 5, 02:44 PMMy beef is - Apple expect me to pay $99 to be able to put my own applications on my own device. On a yearly basis.

I understand why apple do this - people *may* start side-loading applications and thus apple will lose downloads from its appstore ( i.e., free applications - you'd still *buy* your apps from the AppStore ).

Having said that the amount of people that would go this route would be minimal, since you have to compile the application beforehand.. ( mention the word 'compile' alone is enough to deter people ). The majority would just stick to the convenience of AppStore.

Yes, I understand why apple don't like Toyota doing this - its encouraging people to JB their device and potentially degrade their iOS experience, which then reflects upon Apple. However, people should only JB if they understand that doing so voids their warranty AND *may* degrade their device performance.

Your quoting of 'Scion' is short sighted. Had Apple let this fly without comment - replace 'Scion' with 'Others' . Though, you may find the themes 'ugly' others may not.

What smartphone company charges $1500 for a developer license?

LOL! Did the policy change? iOS dev kit was free and the $99 was if you wanted to join the developers program. Either way... $99 to join a developers program is cheap. Yeah... not free... but not $1500 or more like many other companies who have developer programs.

And yes, you do have your "right" to modify your iPhone as you see fit. But I have to agree with Apple on this one... encouraging people to JB for a silly and ugly Scion theme is not good commercial business. What they should say is "Void your Apple warrantee and install our ugly Scion theme". No company should encourage the public to do things that will bust their warrantee and Apple has the rights to "put the brakes" on this Toyota. :D

Stella...You sound like your avatar sometimes.

Wow, that App Store icon devoured my whole screen (MBP 13)

Yeah. Barely fits on my screen and i have a 24" inch imac.

it would be sick to have a 30" retina ACD. /dream

Yeah a 1024 x 1024 icon is amazing considering I would bet a significant amount of 1024 x 768 monitors are still being used. Imagine not being able to view an icon in its entirety on a five-year-old monitor!

Ping GuoMar 27, 03:50 AMSo... cloud computing benefits whom exactly? It's great for syncing - but even unreliable there. Caldav and Google Sync are both problematic. Dropbox works pretty well... but I use if for very specific things. Who wants to stream audio and video in when local storage is so cheap?

Let me guess, the main beneficiaries will be the companies providing the service. And customers who don't sign up for the new, expensive, glitchy service will be increasingly marginalized in terms of the functionality of their devices.

I think we're entering an era of increasing instability and uncertainty, and we should be designing more robust networks and backups, not systems that will experience cascading failure when the power drops out at a sever farm or there's a natural (or man-made) disaster somewhere in the world. One last point - some countries block various cloud-streaming services based on arbitrary decisions, "national security" and "social harmony" *COUGH*china*COUGH*!

Michael ScripApr 26, 03:01 PMOnce again, Apple's stubborn insistance on not licensing out their OS will lead to the marginalization of their hardware. Once iOS hardware is marginalized, you'll see developers shift their focus away to the Android platform -- which will see better app releases and better integration between mobile and tablet OS.

The handwriting is on the wall for Apple. They lost the desktop battle because they were too focused on short-term profit (selling the computer + software) and now they've lost the mobile battle because they were, again, too focused on short-term profit (selling the phone + the OS).

Apple is a hardware company! That's what they do!

Of course Google licenses out their Android OS... that's all they can do.

You keep saying "Apple lot the battle..."

Which battle is that? Apple just sold 18 million iPhones this past quarter... and 16 million iPhones the previous quarter. Any other manufacturer would KILL for those numbers... especially considering Apple only makes 5 phones. How many Android phones are there?

"Android" is simply some software from Google that you can find on 50+ phones. Sure... if you combine them all, their numbers are greater than Apple's numbers.

But market share isn't the goal... that's just a fanboy argument.

brijazzMay 4, 03:40 PMFine. Seems like a logical move, but if Apple wants me to foot part of the bill for distributing their software (via my paid Internet connection) then I certainly expect a significant cut in the cost of the upgrade.

If you drive to the store to buy it instead, should they pay for your gas?

If you order it online, should they pay you for the bit of bandwidth that you used up in placing your order?

Maybe you'll be eco-friendly and walk to the store instead? Bill 'em for new soles on your shoes!

MattInOzMar 31, 04:49 AMI get very worried when I hear El-Jobso talking about post a PC world as if he has decided already that the PC is dead. I for one could not make a living using an iPad and an iPhone.

.

As they stand currently you couldn't make a living from them.
We aren't talking a short transition period either. I don't think jobs is talking about you when he talks about postpc era either. In many ways apple have always been post pc. They target people who's work is defined by what they produce and have the freedom to choose the tools to get that done. The pc era was defined by the beige box that some nameless corporate type would buy by the truck from Dell to sit on everyone's desk so they can work.

That is the era of computing that is done for. It'll move to out of sight clusters with semi articulate terminals powered by cheap lower power arm processors. People who choose their own tools will more and more buy their own tools like they did pre pc.

rinconjAug 7, 07:37 PMIs this whole heat sinked ram issue for real?

I just ordered the top o line, Macpro. but with base ram as usual onoly to see the FB- blah blah heat sinked, get nothing else or your computer will become the wind tunnel of hell, Is this true.

Should I get a 2gig base and try to work up from there?

Hellllpppp!

OMG estimated shipping date Sept 12th, they gotta be kidding!

Their estimated shipping date is on the safe side that it's how long it'll take if it has to be shipped from Mars. I ordered two BT mighty mice the day it came out and the shipping date was said to be some time late Auguest, but it arrived two days later ( late July).

EvangelionJul 21, 03:57 PMsome review of the core2duo (don't remeber the site but it was very reputable) showed that with current software the 4MB cache gives you only 5-7% over the 2MB cache. the 2MB cache chips are much cheaper so that would be a good alternative for the macbooks. i'd buy one.

there are other improvements besides more cache. core duo 2 has seriously beefed up vector-units, advanced memory prefetch and other goodies. iirc, it should be about 20% faster, clock for clock

aohusApr 18, 04:53 PMFirst off the Prada was officially announced by LG on January 18, 2007. The iPhone was announced by Apple on january 9, 2007. The last time that I checked, January 9th came before January 18th. THAT makes the iPhone first, sorry.

Secondly the All of the other copy cats look a ton more like the iPhone than the iPhone looks like the Prada or anything else for that matter.

As far as whether the iPhone and iPad are innovative, I respectfully disagree with you.

WRONG.

The LG Prada was announced in September 6 months ahead of iPhone1 announcement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Prada_%28KE850%29).

Woo-Young Kwak, head of LG Mobile Handset R&D Center, said at a press conference, We consider that Apple copied the Prada phone after the design was unveiled when it was presented in the iF Design Award and won the prize in September 2006.

Check your sources before trying to 'correct' someone. You just got outcorrected buddy.

Seeing how ridiculous this lawsuit is, I think LG should sue all smartphone makers that have a capacitive touch display on their phones. LG was the first to do it with the LG Prada. I think they have a case :P /sarcasm.

andiwm2003Apr 25, 09:58 AMHow so? Everything he said fits the facts as we know them. There is NO evidence that this information gets transmitted to ANYONE, and believe me people are looking hard to prove otherwise. So this makes Steve look like he's telling the truth.

maybe Steve is right in saying that apple is not tracking us. however my iPhone is tracking my movements and stores the data in a unencrypted format that everyone can read out who has access to my phone.

that is the point that apple is critizised for. this is a gaping security hole! nobody has claimed apple is using this information for malicious purposes.

however Steve answered the question if apple is tracking users. a classic strawman.

ValSalvaApr 21, 07:16 PMGood bye expandability, hello cooling issues!

Seriously, why not just keep the xserve and leave the MP alone? Where are we supposed to stuff our upgrades into such a small form factor? Sounds really stupid.

Agreed. The Mac Pro case has been perfected over years and doesn't look at all dated. The more Apple has to pour R&D into a small new case with almost certain version 1 cooling issues, the more likely prices will continue to rise.

ZAiPhoneMar 30, 08:01 AMAnd if you stop subscribing?...What happens to your music files stored in the cloud?

Who cares, you can download it any time to any computer. Talking as a new user of this service, who has used it. You buy music for less than iTunes. I got a free upgrade to 20 GB. Then when can down load everything in your cloud which is DRM free to any computer you're logged in to. I could not care less about the player. The way less restrictive cloud storage is a huge bonus. Yes I know MP3 is not as good as AAC if you're an audiophile and if you are then you're playing lossless made from CD or Vinyl. Amazon is a super simple and easy to use UI with far less restrictions than apple. Not knocking apple I have an iPhone4, iPad2 and 2010 MBP.

here is to getting up early on tuesday morning, dragging my ass to the computer, and going to store.apple.com to be disappointed by the lack of the promise to be back within the hour.

starstreakApr 20, 05:14 AMOMG... Sources close to it says, Iphone5 coming. Faster processor.

Really? Wait. I'll close my eyes and wave my hand and say it'll have a nice screen with it. Might be bigger. But not decided yet. Oh... And it'll look nice! And not too different so to scare away people who likes things the same.... *sigh*

Seriously, I hope they release it soon. It'll need to have at least 64GB of space so I can finally get rid of my ipod.

Make it LARGER. Just a little. Give it a 4in screen. Oh and look... Now you have room for that larger battery and bigger CPU and camera.

I BET you if Apple released two TOP END models.

1) Same form factor. But with new CPU only. and 32gb memory to keep the same form factor.

and

2) Another with the same CPU but with 4in screen, larger battery, better camera, and 64gb memory. Of course a bit heavier.

I bet #2 would sell 3:1... Those who is willing to pay that high price of the 32GB model would be the same group of people willing to get the extras. If not for the screen size, then for the battery or better camera. Would I pay $150 more? Yes.

Here's the kicker. That would make it $450. That's slightly less than an unlocked Android that has most of those features NOW. Not 5 MONTHS from now. Granted, it's no iOS system. But it works.
