lilo777Apr 18, 03:54 PMRevenues are equal to zero if not associated with costs. Give us the profit figures. :D

From Wikipedia:

Samsung: Net income US$ 8.33 billion (2009)
Apple: Profit US$ 14.01 billion (FY 2010)

Apple's profits are higher but that's because they spend about $8 billion less on R&D than Samsung ;)

AvSRoCkCO1067Sep 11, 11:38 AMIsn't it about time they update their .Mac offerings too?

Maybe there's .mac integration with movies...shrug

Either way, it's "been about time for an update" since .mac came out :p

SatoriMay 6, 06:46 AMIf ARM are creating a new architecture to compete with the x86 then Apple will make sure that their OS works on it - just in case a good reason emerges for a switch. If there is any basis whatsoever to this rumour - then this is probably it.

likemyorbsApr 18, 04:35 PMApple does not license elements of its OS to others, unlike Microsoft. There is no reason for one netbook maker to sue another when they both license their OS from Microsoft. The only IP among netbook makers is any proprietary software and hardware design. The two issues are completely different. Apple actually owns the patents to those things they are suing over.

Then they should sue google for making android so similar to iOS, not Samsung. And im not sure if the "look" of icons on a screen can be patented anyway.

tonylAug 7, 03:36 PM$1962 for US Education. w/2 GHz and 160 GB hard drive.
A 2.66GHz CPU is about $400 more expensive than a 2.0GHz, BTO only takes $300 off, so the base config is the best choice. There is a gap, no single processor mac pro, not like Apple's sale strategy. Either Cornore mac pro or iMac will be great.

ehouiMay 6, 08:45 AMYes, you are correct - once you are in science or engineering. But how many children never get there because of a system that over-complicates even simple calculations. All it takes is a couple of bad years/teachers/experiences to put a kid totally off of math. Truly brilliant kids will likely overcome these set-backs, but most kids are not brilliant.... they are good to competent. And good to competent engineers are needed as much as the ones who put landers on the Mars... oh, wait wasn't there a problem with one of those that involved non-metric measurements? (what is the smiley for "snarky" and "tongue in cheek"?)

I can understand the intuitive justification of this argument, but I'd like to see something more rigorous before I accept it. My own intuitive sense is that learning measurement systems, while important to early child development, don't, in of themselves (i.e., imperial or metric), have a causal relationship with math and science success (or failure) in school. I think there are other much stronger factors to success in math and engineering. One example: "male malaise" in the UK and the USA (a general problem in elementary and secondary schools); also, public school math programs are not rigorous and set the bar relatively low.

frankieSep 16, 10:10 AMThe 2GHz downgrade is $300 not $75. Where did you get that number? Apple probably pays a lot less for each so this discount seems fair to me. Oops, right, it's -$75 for the smaller HD. Nevertheless -$300 for the slower Xeons is at best HALF of what Apple is saving. For the CPUs I'm quoting from Intel's published wholesale prices, in lots of 1000, which is officially what their major customers pay.

Lots of people assume that Apple is getting a huge discount off that; not a single one of them has professed to inside knowledge of facts. I don't have any connections either, but without direct info on either side I think it's more likely that Apple is paying pretty close to what Intel says they're paying. Even if Apple is somehow getting a 20+% discount, the price difference between 2.0 Xeon and 2.66 is over $300 each, $600 per Mac Pro.

But in any case, I agree it's true that BTO laptops would be harder to manufacture, so it probably isn't worth it for either Apple or the customer.

rosalindavenueAug 11, 08:24 PMI just read this whole thread (yeah, big Friday night for me) and I can't believe that there is NOT ONE POST about the repeatedly documented fact that manufacturer rumors from Asustek and Quanta in China are ALWAYS B.S. ! There has never been a decent manufacturer-based rumor in the 4 years I've been an apple rumor reader; the track record of these rumors makes macosrumors.com look reliable by comparison.

Notwithstanding the flimsy sources, however, I agree that Yonah is dead as a doornail and that apple will move to merom in all notebooks; all the other manufacturers are going to anyway...

Number 41 is correct. Anyone who doubts that globalization is a lowering of American standard of living is a damned fool. The people who say otherwise do so because it hasn't hit them yet, but it will eventually. Some of you sound like you live in your parents basement and others sound like yuppie pricks. MarkMoseley1Mar 28, 12:02 PMAll this hype can make anyone get upset and want to bash things. But its not worth it. Just keep your shirt on and be patient! I've been stuck with my iPhone 3G. I was gonna upgrade to the iPhone 4 last summer but lost my job and had to wait. I got married and had to jump on my wife's Verizon plan to save money. When the iPhone 4 came to Verizon I was so excited I was gonna do what I could to get it, but still had to wait. Yeah, I got caught up in the hype, but after calming down and thinking WISELY, waiting just a bit longer is not gonna hurt anything. In fact I really want a White iPhone 4, and Im glad I didn't waste money on a black iPhone just because its there.

In the mean time, paying attention to the rumors is good. Seeing some of the odd stuff posted in the forums by members is comical at times. But if we all just chill out and check the main page every few days we will see more stuff leaked.

Just remember, there are people out there that just might leave there iPhone 5 test mule sitting on a bar stool for someone else to find and post about it on the internet....

JaimeChinookNov 16, 07:21 AMI do not use a continuously-connected Time Machine. I keep my TM backups on a drive that connects via USB and it normally resides in my fire-proof safe. TM is only active once a week (or so) when I decide to backup.

I know, all the Mac users who work their machines 24/7 are probably aghast at the idea of not letting TM have 24/7 wireless access. But maybe my technique will prevent the type of TM loss mentioned above... so long as I don't let Sophos run when my backups are going on??

I was taught BODMAS (Brackets, order ...) when I was about 10. Then you never use it again so long as people learn to write maths equations properly.

paul4339Apr 7, 06:30 PM.... They're always playing catchup in regards to Apple and Google. Where is their relevance in today's computing world? I'm having a hard time seeing it outside of a few specialized applications. MS has become IBM. ....

NuviNov 6, 02:23 PMBought TomTom car kit and although I still think its too expensive its handy if you travel a lot by air, rent cars and try to keep everything compact. If you don't have a need to switch you GPS from car to car a stand alone unit would be better due to bigger screen and more features.

Regarding the software Navigon works perfectly with the car kit. The features are close to those you could find in high end stand alone unit meaning its light years a ahead of TomTom's iPhone app, which is just as basic as you can get. In some way its funny how TomTom has a "high end" car dock but their iPhone app is more basic then in their entry level stand alone unit.

amateurmacfreakJul 22, 02:04 PMI would really like to see Apple have a laptop cheaper than $1,100, and I think there would be a definite market for the, especially for teenagers looking into getting a Mac. I know that's unlikely, but...
Anyways I hope that the MBPs get the processor update (and a new enclosure) very soon and I really hope the MBs and Mac Minis follow soon after.
I don't get any reason for Apple not too, and I think with Intel it would be possible for Apple to get some cheaper computers out there. It would be nice, but seems unlikely.... *sighs*

blow45Mar 29, 03:57 PMRight I get that, and thats the point. On the military note does any country spend/waste more money than us on our armed forces. Not even close.

The arms dealers run the US, pretty much, if one is a cynic here. And it's not only the money spent on them, it's the havoc they wreak worldwide. Ask the Libyans, the Iraqis, the Afganis, the Serbs, the Vietnamese, the Cubans etc. etc. It's the price to pay for being a world bully. I am not making a value judgement here, I am just calling it like it is, but I am myself OOT here, so I won't say anymore respecting the topic at hand and the forums.

IbjrMay 9, 03:16 PMI'd be so pissed/happy if it were to become free... 1 year of .Mac and 2 years of MobileMe.

Pissed, I spent $99 for 3 years

Happy, more people will have access to MobileMe's benefits.

I do not understand this flawed logic. Making it free does not impact the service's values for the last three years. If you did not think it was worth the price you paid, you should not have renewed it.

I say this has someone who has paid for dotmac/mobileme since it stopped being iTools. Unlike you, my average yearly cost was 30 dollars because I bought them off of eBay.
