MultimediaAug 25, 01:35 AMI've been thinking of the Mini as a new dedicated Mac for the new ElGato EyeTV Hybrid Digital-Analog Dual Broadcast USB2 Tuner (http://www.elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyetvhybrid&PHPSESSID=01474b717585d5fb012701e85365e373#) that is just out now for only $149IF the mini do get refreshed it will be minor speedbump, maybe a faster CPU, maybe bigger HDD, hopefully a better GPU (or a real GPU for that matter) personally hoping for price decreases, besides a mid range, apple does need a lower costing machine as well! :DIt will be 1.66GHz Core 2 Duo for $599 and 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo for $799. Apple rarely lowers prices and there is certainly no reason for them to do so now.

Just add a Dell 24" Display for $704 and you have a native HD TV with Tivo Like Recorder for only about $1452

Plus it's a Mac! :D

person135Oct 30, 01:08 PMI need a case too :(

I'm looking for a case that can protect from drops/falls and shocks. Screen cover is not necessary, because if the case doesn't come with one I can always buy a separate screen protector.

right now I'm looking at stuff like this case listed on amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Touch-MiniSuit-Diamond-Generation-Chain/dp/B0043L2LRW/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top#productPromotions)

but I don't feel safe with just some random generic case, so does anyone have any recommendations? I've heard otterbox offers good cases with drop/shock protection, but there are none for the itouch 4g right now.

For price, as low as possible, but I would be willing to shell out 30 for a good case (like otterbox!)

oh and did I mention that drop/shock protection is important? :D

any recommendations are good

thx guys

jcdaviesSep 21, 04:44 PMGot mine today. Definitely the low profile look I wanted; feels and looks like black suede. Very attactive.

All openings clear the space they need tocamera lens, speaker, earphone jack, etc. The power and volume switches are covered by the usual raised buttons. The power button takes a little extra oomph to make work since the case fits a little less snug than the Incase Im accustomed to from my previous iPod Touch. Not loose enough to be a problem...actually, loose overstates it a bit...just not as tight a fit as what Im used to.

Will work for the time being, until something irresistible comes out.

Heres what I ordered (http://53zt.sl.pt) (Incipio Dermashot for iPod Touch 4G)

Definitely think the included stand is a stroke of genius in its simple design (would have loved to have this on a couple of overseas flights the past two years, pre-iPad). Am still pondering the do I or dont I question on a screen protector. Now that its glass, simple logic tells me it shouldnt be necessary unless someone wants to begin scraping diamonds down the face....right?

In the article does it not say it comes with a screen protector, are you telling us it doesnt?

Windows,
Words
besides others !!

Guys, every trademark is made up of generic words. That's not what people mean when they say App Store is generic. What they actually mean is it is descriptive.

Let's say I open a shoe store. 2 Trademarks :

1- Shoe Box

Both very generic words, same as everyone who argues "Windows! Amazon! Word! it's all generic!" say. However, I'm not trademarking an actual box that contains shoes. I'm trademarking a name for a store. The shoes don't even have to come in boxes.

2- Shoe Store

This one is descriptive. I'm opening a shoe store, I'm deciding to call it Shoe Store. So now, Yellow can't say "Yellow, the best shoe store around!" because that infringes on my mark. That's what people take exception with here. The mark seems descriptive and thus shouldn't be trademarkable. Apple themselves often refer to it in this descriptive nature in their financials and keynotes.

iGavMar 9, 02:18 PMSo I don't think they did any modifications to the suspension.

I'd hazard a guess that they probably did just because of the difference in preference in ride quality, European cars are naturally exceedingly firm the same cars with sports suspension, excruciatingly so.

The Insignia's not a bad car by any means, the OPC/VXR concept looked particularly mean, especially in wagon form, but the rear of the hatchback looks a little odd to me, fussily unresolved with so many bad lines but that is probably to be expected given it's World Car origins. It's wheelbase looks far too short as well.

http://www.motorward.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/opel-insignia-opc-sports-tourer-1.jpg

I agree. If you look at "small" cars these days, they really aren't that small. Of course, what made the Mini special was packaging, and I don't think we've seen a revolutionary new "package" since the Mini.

I'd suggest that the A2 was the last truly innovative car with regards to packaging, spaceframe, double-floor (like the A Class, but much better implemented) etc.

Something like the Smart is too compromised in achieving it's small footprint, and the IQ is as conventional as they come. As are cars like the Ka/500, i10 etc.

I think VW was on to something with their up! concept, (rear engined, 2 or 3 cylinder engine (I forget which), and a minimalist cabin) but then they decided the layout was too difficult to make work (read as too expensive, can't be bothered) and it's becoming a conventional FE/FWD hatch when they could have launched the new people's car for the 21st century, with an innovative drivetrain and modular interior functionality, based on something like an iPad type device (which is what VW's new Hackney Cab concept looks to be implementing).

Chevy definitely has a lot of work to do to establish a brand presence in Europe - especially since Opel already covers so much territory with its lineup. Apart from niche vehicles like the Corvette, there isn't much of "American" Chevy that can make the transition to Europe. And in the long run,

I can't help but think GM would've been better repositioning Opel. They're making unnecessary (not to mention needlessly expensive) work for themselves with Chevy. It's a bit icy out isn't it? Is that the captain at the bar? ;)

Chevy can't rely on rebadged Korean cars.

They can't especially when rival Korean cars are very, very good indeed, if still a little dull.

Damning with faint praise!

What can I say it's ingrained. :p

In the context of this thread I am happy to see a Cruze diesel come to the US, and I think the Cruze will be an improvement over previous GM small cars,

It's considered more mid-size here if anything. In Holden form, right up until the C-Pillar it's a fine design, but like a lot of cars today, it's got bum trouble.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/21/2009-2010_Holden_JG_Cruze_CDX_sedan_02.jpg/800px-2009-2010_Holden_JG_Cruze_CDX_sedan_02.jpg

It is true that their biggest problem is coming up with a reason to buy it over other similarly anonymous cars.

I think that would be my issue, if I were thinking of dropping the $ on a new car, I'd be thinking to myself, is a new car so important to me as to stomach the depreciation that drops like an atom-bomb, or do I buy myself a new Golf?

And we never got to see it here.

And is it any wonder that Ford U.S. almost went the way of the muff?

if any car company has shown to have any knowledge about badge engineering/branding it's VW AG

Indeed, this alone would be a thread in itself wouldn't it. :p

believe it or not back in the 70ties Opel actually had a trendy, sporty and young reputation image

That'll be the Manta. :p

Vauxhall have never really had that image. It's no coincidence that in Cockney Rhyming Slang, that Vauxhall rhymes with Dull.

it's not exactly GM alone:
yes VW are really bland looking too, but opposed to many GM vehicles if you take the badge away you would be still able recognize that the vehicle is a VW ...

And you highlight exactly where many/most car manufacturers go wrong when it comes to developing a World Car and why they're seldom truly successful. BMW & Mercedes have been producing World Cars for decades haven't they, some would say successfully so. Why? Because they're completely & unapologetically Germanic.

seriously the new micra is bringing the bland back to the brand ..

True that it looks older than the car it replaced.

at least hyundai finally realised that those names they were putting on their models weren't the brightest idea in 95% of all cases

The i10 has gotten rave reviews over here, frequently voted best city-urban-girls car or something I heard that when a man drives one, his balls shrink and he assumes a pre-pubescent state. ;)

They do not care about ONE consumer...but they certainly are going to care about the thousands of units that are being returned and exchanged in hopes of finding one good unit.

chameleon81May 2, 04:33 PMyou people like to discuss about everything.

bobsentellMay 2, 06:00 PMI doubt that the Mac is getting the type of multi tasking that you see with the iPhone, more likely it's getting the option to suspend something in the background, but for everything else, life goes on as normal (eg I can batch stuff in an application whilst I continue surfing, reading mail, watching porn etc).

As for the crippled multi tasking on an iPhone - it's a phone for heavens sake. The BIGGEST problem that all smartphones are suffering from is battery - batteries are not able to cope with the demands of the modern phone.

If you let people multi task properly, the phone would eat its battery alive. And we've all seen bad programming (cough...flash) which given half a chance will kill your battery in 15 seconds stone dead just to show you some crappy ad.

So a phone does need a sensible trade off when it comes to multi tasking, and both Apple and Google (with Android) made a very sensible choice to put battery before true background multitasking.

I wasn't saying there's not justification for single task oparation on a phone. I just think it would be a bad move to bring that type of thinking to an admittedly more powerful machine.

FukuiMar 29, 12:04 AMI would like to see Apple come out with a headless desktop, but not have it be a direct replacement for iMac or eMac, an interim of upgradeability between the PMac line (which as for how desktop machines go, this thing is very upgrade freindly on a whole, the PMac G4's especially) and the iMac with virtually none. A machine that has a AGP slot, processor can be removed/upgraded, one HD and one optical drive bay and maybe 1 or 2 PCI-X slots would be a perfect fit upgradeability wise between they're high and low end. I beleive that if they were to do this I would price it similarly to the iMac, basicly a trade-off monitor for upgrades.. put the right spin on it and I think there's a market for a machine like this.

I have to say this, more upgradability would definitely be needed more than lowering prices (a student can get an eMac for 699). If the eMac was easily able to change CPU/GFX Card HD and CD drive, I would even consider buying one. The thing is, apple would have a good chance to make lots of money on after-market upgrades that they are missing.

firestarterMar 19, 11:50 AMI suspect his foot dragging was done to get other nations to step up and take the lead here. About time IMO.

That's one possible reason for delaying. More here (http://www.timeslive.co.za/world/article973767.ece/British-press-raps-Obama-over-Libya-no-fly-zone-delay).

(FWIW, I don't disagree with you that it's time for other nations to do more)

Thinking ahead, what happens when the power vacuum is in place?

Get ready for the same old story, yet again, just in Libya this time.

I think this action is probably too late to bring about a collapse of the Gadaffi regime. It may well lead to an extended stalemate, with different parts of the country run by Gadaffi and the rebels.

It will probably drag on, and be messy.

AppleScruff1Apr 23, 06:53 PMIf it's all just speculation, why be so quick to shout "privacy invasion" when you don't know the full story? It can't be one rule for you and another for everyone else.

The technical explanation from an Apple engineer will probably be the best explanation we'll see - Apple's PR rarely go into technical details on such matters. Anntenna-gate has been the only exception to that rule I can think of.

I'm not the one being quick to shout privacy invasion, it was on every tv news channel and news site. Somebody thinks it's a big deal. Now Apple brass is in damage control mode and must come up with some type of answer to appease the public.
