Look, if Apple dominates the tablet market because the iPad is genuinely better than the other guy's tablet (and don't get me wrong, I think it is) and that causes Apple's sales to far eclipse everyone else, then GREAT! People vote with their wallets and the dominant winner is clear. But if Apple becomes the dominant player because, heck, they're so big that they can simply BUY THEIR WAY to the top, then that's not really fair for anybody, is it?

Isn't that how Windows got their market share? Because Microsoft got so big that they could start dictating deals to the PC makers? Didn't we bash them for "forcing" Windows on consumers, not giving them a fair choice?

"Are they able to manufacture enough to meet current demand and future orders for this product?" "Can existing production lines be converted easily to manufacture new products without impacting existing lines?" "Are there any manufacturers ramping for an unannounced product, especially if Apple is its customer?" "Who would be the display manufacturers suppliers of parts that might also indicate a shift in production to a new product?" "How Might the global economy and events in Japan impact supply?" "How long does it take to build the product and in sufficient number meeting QC and then ship it an assembly plant?" "Where is the assembly plant for the product and is there unusual activity at the plant?" "Has anyone actually TALKED to someone who works at these facilities?"

There are people in the Apple Rumors blogosphere asking those questions. I think most of the larger players in that world, including Gruber, are up on the leaks/rumors coming out of Apple's manufacturing pipeline and factor that into their speculation. Outside of that, unless you're Tim Cook or Steve Jobs, no one knows with absolute certainty the answers to your questions.

As far as news that could point to mass Retina Display production, there's the $7.8 billion display/component deal with Samsung that had everyone buzzing earlier this year, and the $1.9 billion Retina Display factory they are building with Toshiba. The factory will build around 17 million displays a month and is expected to go online in the second half of 2011.

Again, I have to wonder, what does this mean for the 2012 iPad? Assuming the Retina Display is the iPad 2 HD's main selling point, will next years iPad revision lack the Retina Display that all other iOS devices have? Or will they go with a "lower quality" (looks great to me) Retina like the iPod Touch?

Why would Apple release such an expensive iPad during the Q1 holiday season? Would they really expect an iPad at that price point to spur holiday sales?

If an "additional" iPad debuts in September, I think it will be something priced to set the holiday season on fire. Subsidised $199 3G iPads? Or a 7 inch iPad with Retina Display at a lower price point?

EagerDragonJul 21, 07:55 PMDon't get me wrong, I like to have the machines grow in power ever few months better than ever 12 to 18 months like we used to see before the switch.

However I wonder about the financials, how it will affect the inventories every time there is a new processor. Intel is competing for its life with AMD and we all get affected. But so do the manufactorers that have to time their productions so they don't end up with a lot of inventory with the old chip, If they wait too long to release improved machines then the competion gets all the good publicity and gets to be first. If too early, then have to discount a lot of inventory to move it.

Good news can also be bad news, but...... Bring it on, I like it, but watch the bottom line please.:o

If your phone can do it all, why make standalone music players?

I think the iPod market (especially the Touch) will have a long tail, and there's no reason for Apple to not profit from it in the meantime. Specifically, it will continue to satisfy the young 'uns demographic, the parents of whom are not yet willing to commit to a phone contract.

If you mean that we should get free Cloud services without ads then I think you're completely wrong and I'm most worried about sites that provide free services and have absolutely nothing but VC cash to pay for it. And if you mean we should have the option of paying for Cloud services to avoid ads, then fine, but you can do that with Gmail, so I don't see why you think MobileMe is any better than Gmail (from the privacy perspective).

Lastly, I wouldn't lump Google and Facebook together when it comes to privacy. Sergey Brin and Larry Page have made very strong statements about their respect for their users and they understand that without the users they'd have no company. Eric has made a lame-brained comment or two, and Google Buzz screwed up, but they fixed it (and at least when you signed into Gmail they had the option to opt out of it).

Facebook is a whole different story. Their whole exec branch seems to disregard privacy and they've been rolling out auto-opt-in feature after feature that removes your privacy.

Eric Schmidt's comments about privacy are disconcerting to me

This is after the whole Google Buzz fiasco. There's money in trying to convince people to be open. Facebook and Google data mine consumer behavior to make money and consumers need to act like they got a good education and understand where they are being used.

The assumption that those that want privacy are doing something illegal is asinine.

Hey it's not a choice for everyone. I'm just at a point in my life where $6 and some change is going to put me out especially when my online data is not being mined for profit. I've been happier than I though I would with my MobileMe account. I'm on the west coast so i'm assuming my data center is in Cali and performance has been fine.

The more Apple has to pour R&D into a small new case with almost certain version 1 cooling issues, the more likely prices will continue to rise.It would save money with the need for less raw materials.

All (newer) iOS devices other than the iPad have some form of Retina Display. All iOS devices have an A4 chip (which will become A5 this year). iOS 4.2 unified the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch lines. Clearly Retina is the one missing feature that's coming to iPad. All iPads.

To me, it makes more sense that Apple would wait until they can build these in bulk, and sell them at the same price point, than to introduce a new top tier $800-$900 iPad (assuming that's what it is) with a Retina Display. Will it have 3 tiers of memory as well and two flavors of 3G? With those options we'll easily see it surpassing the price of a Macbook or Macbook Air. Not quite sure a device that expensive will spur Holiday sales. If we lived in that reality, people would be receiving Macbook Airs like they were stocking stuffers. But Apple's Q1 numbers show us devices that expensive don't move in the numbers that iPods, (subsidised) iPhones, and iPads do.

The only way this makes sense is if this "additional" September 2011 iPad, has other super features that warrant it's "special" release. An iPad Pro for example, with more memory, even more power, and Thunderbolt. Or if Apple decides to move the iPad introductions to Q1 and do away iPod special events. If iPods are intro'd at this new event, it would be in passing.

Is there such a thing as a "normal economic business cycle"? Seems like every cycle involves a different regulatory environment, different tax structure and different fad currents. How can one even suggest that what worked before will work again? (My car was overheating and losing coolant, so I replaced the water pump, therefore, if I experience more overheating and leaking, that is what I should do again.)

Really, the cycles appear to be too steep on both sides. To me, it looks like the sheep converging on what is hot at the moment are causing the bubbles. A roaring economy almost always leads to a crash, we should have smoother growth with shallower cycles, perhaps by throttling massive movements of capital. An unregulated market does correct itself as needed, but the corrections sure look a lot worse than they need to be. At least as far as I can see.

I haven't done ripping in a while, but decent encoding was about about 1Mb per minute for music, and the goal for a feature length movie was about 650Mb (The size of a CD ;)). Maybe they have gotten better, but you do realize a DVD is like 4.5Gb and it already is a lossy format?

650Mb movies are tolarable on a TV, but not a HD TV in my opinion. The few movies I did encode down, I was happy with 250Mb feature length movies at 320x200. Yes, I've been under a rock, but only for a couple years.



fishmdMar 28, 11:00 AMWhile I'm not saying there will or won't be hardware at WWDC, The Loop's interpretation of the invitation is just plain incorrect. If they have other sources that indicate no hardware, fair enough, but the invitation to WWDC 2011 is not enough to base this rumor on.

Let's look at past WWDC invitations and events:

WWDC2010 : "The center of the app universe" - iPhone 4
WWDC2009 : "Make your mark here" - MacBook Pros, iPhone 3GS
WWDC2008 : "A landmark event, in more ways than one" - iPhone 3G
WWDC2007 : "Save the date", themed leopard - No hardware

They apparently do have other sources. There are also a lot of other sources as well that have been saying there would be no new iphone 5 this summer. And also, look at the events you list above. When Leopard was introduced at WWDC in there was no hardware. I expect then when they introduce Lion (WWDC 2011), there will be no hardware either, just like all the analysts are saying now. It really is not to hard to wrap your head around people. :p

Unlike Americans, the Japanese would rather build everything in Japan and pay a higher cost for it (= inefficiency). (I live in Japan and am fluent in Japanese)

Well, the US spends 20 billion a year on agriculture subsidies as well, so we're in about the same boat. At least Japan uses agriculture subsidies to support small farmers. We use them to support DelMonte.

And as for the reason why Japanese spend more on Japanese products--that they are higher quality--if Japanese companies can convince Japanese consumers to spend more on domestically made products, why can't American companies do the same?

In general, Japanese made products *are* better. That's not inefficiency, that's good marketing and an educated consumer.

I think that Apple should concentrate on getting lots of switchers. Apple probably care about us old "maccies", because, of course, it is very rare for a mac user to change to using the Operating System That Must Not Be Named.

I therefore think Apple promoing iMacs, Macbooks, MBPs, MPs, MMs, etc. would be in their best interest, as potential switchers would know that Apple intends to bring out cool machines as soon as they can, if not immediately. Sure, it would impact on initial sales, as no-one would buy any of their computers between then and the shipping date, however, Apple would catch many fence-sitters who would otherwise bite the bullet and buy a much cheaper (and much more pathetic) PC after Steve's Keynote.

Wining Switchers should be Apple's goal now.

Like someone else said, That is exactly my case! I am carefully awaiting a Core 2 Duo version of the iMac. It's the only thing holding me down right now.
