I agree w/ this. Everyone has internet at home and everyone who is so into media, already has a media server. Stuff like air video and streamtome works just fine for streaming media from anywhere internet is available.

People who care so much about accessing media enough to take their time to upload their stuff to cloud can certainly do same at their own house. Is this really for people who don't have internet at home or can't afford nas at home?

Seriously, what is the point of all this? Only time cloud storage works is for group collaboration where people need to share things from everywhere. For personal stuff, personal computer works the best w/ decent internet.

You do not need a computer to own the phone. (updates going forward i believe require a computer but over the air updates are on the horizon)

My iPad i haven't yet synced with my computer as an example. walked out of the store smart cover on and my email already setup.

what about future updates? what if you can't go to a local apple store? i can but what about others who don't have one nearby? something apple should think about.

gnasher729Aug 7, 02:23 PMJust checked the Intel July price list: Prices per Woodcrest processor are $851, $690 and $316 for one chip running at 3.0, 2.66 or 2.0 GHz, that is $1702, $1380 and $632 for two processors.

Somehow I suspect that Apple pays different prices, because you save $300 if you go down to 2 GHz and you pay $800 extra for 3.0 GHz. Should be the other way round according to the Intel price list. So the 2.66 GHz is a real bargain compared to the others.

If you subtract the processors from the price, then you pay $1597, $1119 and $1567 for the three models.

Yes, precisely. Android and other handsets are moving to Tegra 2/Orion based platforms with maybe quad core SoCs coming in Fall '11 from nVidia. An A5 equipped iPhone shipping around September would be outdated the minute it hits the shelves as far as hardware is concerned.

With Pocket Legends already reporting that gaming on Android is making them more money than on iOS and this delay in Apple's usual release schedule, it could mean that iOS gaming could lose out to Android and set the pace for future developments, just like what happened to Apple in the 80s with the rise of the PC.

While I doubt we have anything to worry about short term as iOS device owners, if they keep this up in the long term and keep losing ground to Android, it might become a problem.

Quite true, I'm pretty sure it was. But at least it's possible somehow.

I don't see how Apple could get away with not having a way to make an install backup. The recovery partition is not good enough. It's a fact of life that hard drives die.

Come on Apple, that's just being cheap. Great, so let the user download the image and then what? Now they have to burn it to a DVD (probably a double-layer DVD too, which are a lot more expensive than a regular single-layer DVD). I love the App Store concept, but not for OS releases like this. And no way in hell am I using some "upgrade" option instead of a clean install.

1. You don't need to burn it to DVD to install it.
2. You can still wipe the disk via Disk Utility in the installer if you want to do a clean install. For separate disks/partitions at the moment, I think.

darrensAug 4, 07:59 AMDon't blame Apple at all, I just have a hard time getting excited about hardware that can't do what I need it to do. Looking forward to a Universal app from Adobe and Macromedia so I can be excited about Apple's offerings.

I'm typing this on my iBook G4, which is perfectly good for me for the next couple of years - don't need anything better. Doesn't stop me from getting excited about the new machines! Especially when I work day-to-day programming on a cruddy beige box Win2k machine.

I'm actually more interested to see what Leopard brings - all the supposed rumors so far have turned out to be speculation. Tiger was a bit meh to me - spotlight and dashboard really doesn't do it for me. Hopefully Leopard will have a bit more innovation!

But later this year, when my mortgage is paid off, I might spring for my first iPhone (although i'm still concerned the small screen may be unmanageable for me... due to vision issues which may, or may not, be resolved later this year).

Also, when my mortgage is paid off, I'll consider getting a MobileMe account and next year perhaps a 128 GB iPad 3 (Wi-Fi + LTE/G3 GSM). If I get that iPad 3, I'll give my old iPad 2 to a friend.

But all this is a matter of treating myself to toys that I do not really need. First I need to focus on financial fundamentals like paying off my mortgage.

It is closer to the holidays which would be good for sales of those new products, but at the same time launching 2-3 new products in one month would be a waste of the massive amounts of publicity each launch gets. (Except maybe the iPod touch which usually isn't very much)

I don't think they will launch iPad 3 in September either just because the demand for iPad 2 will still be high, and probably elevated with the launch of iOS 5.

Announcing iPhone 5 at WWDC when it doesn't launch until September would probably hurt iPhone 4 sales up to that point.

I just skimmed through this thread and i saw posts like "The next iPhone will be an iPhne 4S/iPad 2 type upgrade, so it won't be big". Or "the next iPhone should be called iPhone 4GS or iPhone 4S, because it won't be a big upgrade".
I'm sorry but a Dual Core processor itself makes it a huge upgrade. The iPhone 3GS was the biggest upgrade internally, the iPhone 4 has more RAM.

Don't judge a book by it's cover.

Btw, why would Apple go back to messing up with their names? iPhone 3G was almost the exact same as the Original iPhone, except it had 3G functionalities. So they had to emphasize on "3G", hence the name.
In a marketing stance, it didn't make sense for Apple to go from iPhone 3G to iPhone 3, people want to see improvements not a removal of a letter.
And now finally they came back to the numerical way of naming the iPhone, and i think it'll stay just like that. It makes no sense for Apple to mess it up.
Otherwise the iPad 2 according to some people here should've been called "iPad 1S" :rolleyes:

This should make sense:
iPhone = iPhone 1
iPhone 3G = iPhone 2
iPhone 3GS = iPhone 3
iPhone 4 = iPhone 4
iPhone 5 = iPhone 5

Makes sense? Now how messed up would this be..
iPhone 4 = iPhone 4
iPhone 4S = iPhone 5
iPhone 5 = iPhone 6

In other words, don't undermine the iPhone 5. Due to the leak of the 'prototype' iPhone 4 last year, Apple has been very strict with their next device, by this time last year we knew a lot about the iPhone 4.
So we can only wait until a date closer to September (from what it seems), to see the actual features of the phone.
Keep in mind guys, Apple is going to add things to make current iPhone 4 owners upgrade, it's all marketing.

They don't have to do squat really. They can just call it the iPhone 5 and people would still buy it if it only had a slightly better camera in it.

Cloud-based would make sense if there was wireless and cellular completely covering the nation/world... using cloud at this time would castrate their share of market. I take "cloud-based" rumors as pure rumors at this time. Maybe in 2020 it will be feasible, and no doubt it is being developed. However, by 2020 we will have 1TB iPads. What's the point of cloud, then? Control? Observation?

ie: If it allows you (as you say) to show guests your iPhoto gallery directly on the pad or on the TV, Home movies or downloads at your fingertips (no need to cue them in the office)... and if it costs less than half what a MacBook costs... is it still appealing?

What about if it can interface with MacMini to become a remote screen? (ie: do everything you say, but only when in the house)

I would. I could move my iMac out of the living room and/or add a Mini. But that doesn't answer the question "Is Apple going to release a Tablet soon?"

With a tablet mac Apple would only be a small player in a small market. This is why they have never released a tablet mac.

What I'm speculating on is what might drive Apple to enter the market now. If it is a true Tablet Mac then there has to be something that sets it apart from what is being offered now. Since 2007 is going to be "the year of the movie downlod" (iTV and iTunes Movie Store playing very promeniently in Apples product lineup) I tried to come up with an explanation which fit into this focus. A living room orientated tablet seemed to fit.

Of course this so called tablet could be several different things — a true video iPod, a supered up remote, a UMCP based micro mac. I just find it fun to speculate based on the info at hand:)
