sommer182Mar 28, 10:39 AMI could see this happening. It would make sense to me to try and consolidate their iOS devices to one release cycle. iPod and iPhones are fairly close as it is, mid-summer and early fall. Would it be a big shock to move the new kid iPad and it's older siblings into one release? No.

ftaokApr 25, 11:13 AMFor the record, I don't see what the big deal is ... however, this could all just go away if Apple were to disclose the nature of the db file and what it's used for. As long as the explanation is benign and plausible, I'd think everyone would be satisfied ... except for the folks that are just looking to disagree.

Anyways, unless there's a strategic or proprietary reason not to disclose the nature of the file, then they should just come out and explain.

Don't panicMay 3, 12:22 PMIn the meanwhile, the villain...

so is the turn of the villain simultaneous to the heroes (meaning he can communicate/implement his moves at any time) or do turns alternate (and if they do, do they in singles or in pairs)?
what's the point of having 'rounds'?
is there a time-limit to the villain's decision before it defaults in no-action, 1 point accrued?

(i know i am a pain, but i want the rules to be clear)

mrj412Nov 14, 01:24 PMShould I continue to use the free Sophos or switch to the ESET paid AV?

On a iMac for business and home use.

Thanks for any insight.

I would recommend staying with Sophos. My company is in the process of purchasing Sophos for our Linux file servers on my recommendation. I tested several AV vendors and found Sophos to be best for our environment. Its extremely light on system resources and highly rated in antivirus tests.

The reason you haven't heard of Sophos is that they have been enterprise only. This is their first offering directly to consumers.

Giving the Mac version out free to consumers is very smart on their part. It gives them a larger install base which means they can find new malware faster. This then allows them to provide a better product to their enterprise customers.

Edit: Oh, I didn't see davegoody's post above that said this better until after I posted this.

iStudentUKApr 10, 02:04 PMYou wouldn't think that 4 x 5 + 4 meant 4 x (5 + 4), so why would you think that 48 / 2 x 12 meant 48 / (2 x 12)?

I don't think a typical mathematician would write this on paper using a "/", rather they would use a "_". Using / on anything more complex than x/y is very poor form.

Here, I assume / is being used as MacRumors isn't set up for writing equations. So I asked myself how would I write this in _ format?

I thought the answer would be-

48 (9 + 3)
2

Hence leading to 288.

The problem is / leads to confusion because you don't know if the person typing wanted to use a _ but couldn't, it is the intention and use that is confusing, not the symbol itself. Nobody should have to use PEDMAS for something silly like this- people should write equations in a decent format.

EDIT- using the x symbol is also something I don't like to do if I can avoid it. 5x6 or 5*6 not as good as 5(6) (or just xy if algebra is involved).

Chip NoVaMacNov 27, 12:57 AMThere will NOT be a tablet - there is ZERO market for it.
A device already exists that does the work of a tablet PC - its called an iBook.

IF you want a really cheap tablet - try pen and paper.

There maybe "ZERO" interest in a Tablet PC for the M$ implementation of it.

There were MP3 players before the iPod, but Apple made it easy and cool to have one.

The original Toshiba Libretto had a decent following in its day.

The iBook is a close also ran IMHO. Given the comments here there is a desire for something the size of the 10" Sony sub-notebook that would give users the option of a touch screen and keyboard. In particular, if it were very near or under the $1000 price point.

WolfpupNov 5, 08:26 AMSophos provides solutions mainly for large corporations. Its as legitimate as it can get. Whats good about is the small foot print their software takes. So its all business and no nonsense "turbo meters" etc. like with Intego Virus Barrier. Honestly I have no idea why they are giving away Home version for free. The business solutions are expensive. Then again if you really want to sell to corporations it makes sense to give people free home versions to gain presence and goodwill. After all those free Home version using people work in corporations...

From this comment I can tell you have had absolute NO EXPERIENCE with the product.

We have had it in our company for 10 years and it's absolutely non-intrusive and hassle free.

Please don't generate noise if you don't have any relevant experience.

Patrick

Nice! Thanks for the info...so I take it this is better than Symantec's product? I used to like their corporate product for Windows, but it got AWFUL as of version 11, so I'm hesitant to install the OS X version (we've got a site license) so it's nice to have an alternative finally!

StellaApr 18, 04:20 PMActually, YOU win. The United States provides for patents to "promote" and "further" advancements in the things that we all come here to discuss everyday. One can argue the merits of such a system but that is one of the purposes of the patent laws. Basically, incentive to make the world a better place for all.

Take away the incentive and there might not be as much innovation.

What you describe is the ideal world.. however, patents are abused these days.

Patents are used to squash competition, and in many occasions, they have done. Company A sues Company B to bankrupcy over patent dispute. Company B held the patent...

firewoodMar 26, 11:21 PMMy thoughts exactly. Our school district (ISD 482) just bought 1,465 iPads for its students, and I can see us getting really mad if Apple were to release a new iPad 6 mos. later.

So how is that much different from them releasing new iPads 11 months later... like they just did? All the iPads in use didn't suddenly stop working.

senc01aMay 6, 06:01 AMIf this turns out to be real, and windows 8 doesn't support ARM or for whatever reason doesn't run on Apple ARM laptops, this will be a major disaster.
Even though I hardly ever use windows, I migrated to Mac because I could use it if I ever needed to.

JATApr 25, 11:16 AMWhere do people get the idea that Google collects location data regardless of whether or not you selected Agree on the popup?

Probably because their gps features work on their phones. And the fact they can make phone calls.
But keep in mind that the data might be wrong. I typed in my real name and it came up with me . . . but with details oddly wrong. Multiple accounts that could be me, but in each case with wrong data. I clearly have messed up some databases along the way (good).
According to that site, there are 7 people in my family. I'm going to start counting that many on my tax return! The extra cash could buy me a MBP every year.
It's funny how people are panicking about this, but not the Geo-Map feature on any photo taken with an iPhone. Which can be pinpointed to 50m of where you took the photo.
Or any good "real" camera, too.
Wow, I just realised I've been on this forum for quite a while.
Pffftt! Newbie, you're not even in the first 6000 to sign up! ;)
You're holding it wrong. Non-Issue.
Technically, that was an opinion. The issue today sounded more like he was stating facts. So, let's actually look at them...

Looks factual to me. See bold.

[Caveat: this is an old copy, it's from last year sometime]

Information about nearby cell towers and Wi-Fi access points is collected and sent to
Apple with the GPS coordinates of the device, if available: (1) when a customer requests current
location information and (2) automatically, in some cases, to update and maintain databases with
known location information. In both cases, the device collects the following anonymous
information:
Cell Tower Information: Apple collects information about nearby cell towers,
such as the location of the tower(s), Cell IDS, and data about the strength of the
signal transmitted from the towers. A Cell ID refers to the unique number
assigned by a cellular provider to a cell, a defined geographic area covered by a
cell tower in a mobile network. Cell IDS do not provide any personal information
about mobile phone users located in the cell. Location, Cell ID, and signal
strength information is available to anyone with certain commercially available
software.
Wi-Fi Access Point Information: Apple colIects information about nearby Wi-Fi
access points, such as the location of the access point(s), Media Access Control
(MAC) addresses, and data about the strength and speed of the signal transmitted
by the access point(s). A MAC address (a term that does not refer to Apple
products) is a unique number assigned by a manufacturer to a network adapter or
network interface card ("NIC"). The address provides the means by which a
computer or mobile device is able to connect to the Internet. MAC addresses do
not provide any personal information about the owner of the network adapter or
NIC. Anyone with a wireless network adapter or NIC can identify the MAC
address of a Wi-Fi access point. Apple does not collect the user-assigned name of
the Wi-Fi access point (known as the "SSID," or service set identifier) or data
being transmitted over the Wi-Fi network (known as "payload data").
So, the only way for this data to become "personal", is for a cop/hacker to actually take it from YOUR device/computer. Apple's copy has no personal data.

zelmoNov 26, 11:47 AMI've always thought the tablet PC was cool tech in search of a practical application to take off in popularity.
Using a tablet as remote for your iTV media center? check
Using a tablet to wirelessly surf the web/email? check
Using a tablet as portable music and video player? check

With the right specs and price, Apple could pull this off.
